Rental Car Controls: What to Check Before Driving
Find the lights, wipers, demisting and parking controls on your rental car before departure. Use this practical handover preparation checklist.
The car you rent for a trip to Trabzon may differ from the model you normally drive. Being comfortable with the transmission type does not mean you know where the wiper stalk, light switch or parking brake is. After completing the vehicle condition check, make time to understand the controls before joining traffic. This guide does not provide model-specific operating instructions: the handbook for the actual vehicle and the handover team's explanation are the relevant references.
Prepare your seating position before moving
With the car safely parked, locate the seat and steering adjustment mechanisms, check how to adjust the mirrors, and ensure the seat belt sits appropriately. If you cannot find an adjustment, ask the team rather than forcing a mechanism. The previous driver's settings may not suit your visibility or reach. Secure luggage and loose belongings before setting off as well.
If you requested a child seat or other equipment, separately confirm that it is present and that its use has been explained. This does not mean every vehicle has the same equipment or that a particular seat suits every child. Refer to the equipment actually confirmed for your reservation.
Locate lights, wipers and demisting controls
Ask the team to show these controls while parked, instead of first searching for them when rain starts or the glass fogs up. Some cars have automatic functions, but do not rely on them until you have confirmed that your vehicle has them and understand their operation. Menu labels, stalk movements and dashboard symbols can vary by model.
- Where is the light control, and how can you identify its current setting?
- Which controls operate the front wipers and, if fitted, the rear wiper?
- How do you distinguish windscreen demisting from rear-window heating?
- Where is the hazard warning button?
- How do the mirror adjustments and window controls work?
This checklist does not prescribe a sequence of button presses. Its purpose is to help you learn where each function is and where to find the correct instructions during handover. Rather than searching through settings or watching a phone video while driving, make any necessary adjustment after stopping safely.
Request an explanation of the actual gear selector and parking brake
An electronic parking brake, keyless start or unfamiliar gear selector may behave differently from the one you used before. Keep the vehicle safely parked and ask for an explanation appropriate to that model of how to prepare to move and how to park it. A video of a similar-looking car is not definitive guidance for the vehicle you have received.
This guide is not a lesson in hill starts, gear changes or driving. If you still do not understand the controls after the explanation, speak to the handover team again instead of expecting to work it out on the road. Choosing an automatic or manual car is a separate decision; understanding the controls at handover matters for both.
Do not guess the meaning of a dashboard message
If you do not understand an indicator or warning message, show the team its exact wording. Do not assume everything is normal based on its colour or on a symbol you remember from another car. Instead of leaving with an unexplained warning, ask for an explanation, a record of the issue and confirmation that any necessary action has been completed. Resetting warnings or carrying out technical work is outside the scope of this article.
If a problem appears later, prepare a clear description of what you observed, when it began and your safely parked situation, then use the verified contact channel. Follow the vehicle handbook and authorised guidance rather than attempting a diagnosis yourself.
Arrange navigation and belongings before departure
While parked, check where the phone can be positioned, which connection method is supported if one is needed, and whether the cable obstructs any control. Do not treat a screen or connectivity feature as promised until you have confirmed it on the actual car. Prepare the route beforehand; do not pair a phone or enter an address while driving. Ask how to use the relevant menu to remove your personal data before returning the car.
Finish with a short handover recap
Illustrative question: “Could you show me the lights, wipers, demisting, gear selector and parking brake on this car once more? If a warning appears, which channel should I use and what information should I provide?” This is a preparation example, not a real customer conversation.
Learning the controls complements the vehicle condition record and contract review; it does not replace either. When planning your Trabzon car rental, explain your requirements and clarify handover details with the team. Read the rental conditions for the current framework. Source checked: 27 October 2026. Model-specific instructions require the handbook for the car supplied. No particular equipment or free additional service is promised here.
